Our montessori Mission

To create a Montessori learning environment for preschool aged children based on independence, mindfulness and community building. We nurture the whole child by educating through organic life experiences, healthy relationships with self and others, and offering an extensive curriculum that will allow the child to be a successful learner for life.

The first essential for the child’s development is concentration. The child who concentrates is immensely happy.

How it all began

Sukha Montessori has been a dream of founder, Chelsea Porter for over 10 years. After graduating from LSU with an Early Childhood Education degree, she went to Houston for Montessori teacher training. She began teaching children ages 3-6 in a public school environment in 2008. It was exciting to offer a special curriculum to a variety of students in a very diverse community. After three years of teaching, she began to see the true impact of the Montessori Method. The students that went through the full cycle were thriving! They were reading earlier than their peers in traditional school and their vocabulary included knowledge of the continents, geometric solids, and numbers with quantities into the thousands. She was able to “follow the child,” which is simply meeting each child where he or she is academically. This is the beauty of it all. ALL children can be successful. Year after year, the curriculum became more and more of a passion. After 10 years of teaching 3-6 year olds, Chelsea helped open another public Montessori school in New Orleans. Leaving the classroom and entering an administrative role was a great learning experience but for three years, she felt like she was missing something: being with the students, watching the light bulbs go off when a child makes a connection, seeing the older students help the younger ones. It was the desire to be in the classroom combined with having two young children of her own, that helped ignite the fire to launch Sukha Montessori. It was a dream that she often talked about with co-workers, friends and family. Today, Sukha is a reality.
